The Best Thing in Life

Last night at the fair, I was at a booth sharing the gospel with a host of people. One couple in particular stood out. They were Hispanic — the guy and his girlfriend — and he translated for her as I shared. At one point, he was searching for the Spanish word for “heaven.” It was a cute moment, and together we kept moving forward in the conversation.

When it came time to pray, they repeated after me in English: “Jesus, come into my heart. Be my Savior.” Then I encouraged them to pray in Spanish, their heart language. It was beautiful. Afterward, I invited them — as I always do — to turn and tell each other what they had just done. With joy in their voices, they told one another in Spanish: “I just invited Jesus to come into my heart.” That moment made them giggle with delight, and they walked away smiling and thankful.

It was the best part of the night. I was pretty excited, and as I was saying how awesome it was, one of the guys in the booth — a friend with lots of experience sharing the gospel and leading people to Christ — was excited for me. He said, “Yeah, there’s nothing like leading someone to Jesus — it’s the best thing in the world.”

I disagreed immediately. Because while it is incredible, I couldn’t help but think about something even greater. Let’s just say there are a few joys in life we all recognize — but above them all, the deepest joy is intimacy with God Himself.

The Bible says, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God” (Psalm 42:1). More than any single moment, the real treasure of faith is living in union with God — experiencing His affection, His love, His desire for us. Faith is not just a list of duties; it’s a love affair with the One who made us.

If your relationship with God feels like a checklist, I’d love to talk with you. Spiritual direction and coaching with Coaching the Red Line is about helping people rediscover intimacy with God — the best thing in the world.
